(Editor’s note: Summer is over in Europe. But the sun and heat continue on beaches from Greece and Turkey down into Cyprus.)
Cyprus is a Mediterranean paradise where some of the best beaches in Europe are waiting. This sunny island, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, framed by golden sandy beaches and formed under the influence of a unique mix of Greek and Turkish cultures, is located where Europe meets Asia and Africa.
Cyprus has it all, whether you’re in search of a perfect family-friendly beach, a secluded bay for snorkeling or a nonstop party life. The island is divided between the Republic of Cyprus (in the south) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (in the north). Most visitors who come here fly to Larnaca or Paphos International Airports. You may find an appropriate flight through your favourite platform (Skyscanner) but the key advice is to make a booking in advance for the best deals.
As for the Turkish side, it remains undiscovered for most European travellers. Crossing between north and south is easy at official checkpoints. Don’t miss your opportunity to discover the hidden side of Cyprus with this guide.
How to cross from the Greek Side to the Turkish Side
Most visitors can travel between the Cypriot south and the Turkish-controlled north through the UN-controlled Green Line without issues:
- On foot: There are special official border crossing points which are open to tourists. The Ledra Street pedestrian checkpoint in central Nicosia is the most popular.
- By car: Crossings Agios Dometios in Nicosia or Ayios Nikolaos in Famagusta are the most common points.
Travel tip: Don’t forget your passport or European ID card. Check visa requirements for your nationality in advance, but for most nations it’s permitted.
One more important tip to remember: You need separate car insurance for both sides of the border at the checkpoint as it’s valid only for one country.
The whole process of exploring Northern Cyprus beaches, historical sites, and traditional villages is fast and easy.
Traveling Directly to Northern Cyprus from Turkey
If you’re already in Turkey and want to explore the Turkish side of Cyprus you can fly directly into Ercan International Airport, Nicosia from Istanbul or Ankara. North Cyprus resorts combine beach relaxation, entertainment and nightlife. It is not as commercialised as the Greek side and is much more cozy. Its features include luxurious resorts, mostly located in Kyrenia and Famagusta. There are also literary landmarks including Bellapais, the quiet mountain village British author Lawrence Durrell wrote about in his book “Bitter Lemons.”
Most of the hotels, such as the Elexus Hotel & Resort in Kyrenia, combine seaside views, great spa services and world-class casinos. It’s not a surprise that many Turkish travellers choose this destination instead of the overcrowded Antalya shore.
Extra travel tips for a beach holiday in Cyprus
To get the most out of your Cyprus vacation consider these simple tips:
When to visit Cyprus: The high season is from May to October, but the nature attracts visitors throughout the year.
Driving & transportation: There are public transport options but they are quite limited, especially if you want to explore the more hidden parts of the island. Renting a car is the best option for freedom to explore. The most beautiful beaches are remote, far out on the Karpas Peninsula. Some of my favourites are around Cape Greco. Try snorkelling in crystal clear waters. You may jump on a boat trip or a kayaking tour. Day cruises are available in the marina. Have a walk around the harbour in Ayia Napa or any other around the island and you’ll get a lot of offers for boat trips.
What to eat in Cyprus: Food is a major part of the Cyprus beach experience. You’ll find beach tavernas, seafood grills and casual cafes by the sea with Cyprus meze, grilled halloumi, kleftiko, sheftalia, fresh octopus, calamari and baklava.
Insider tip: In the harbors, Ayia Napa or Kyrenia, there are numerous small local restaurants which offer the catch of the day with a glass of local wine at sunset.
