The Netherlands isn’t one of those countries that’s quickly associated with beach holidays, but maybe it should be. Sure, you won’t find palm trees or turquoise lagoons here, but Dutch shores make up for it in other ways: long coastal walks, lazy days with your toes in the sand, beach clubs sundowners and — if you’re lucky with the weather — even a dip in the North Sea.
Some of these spots are just a short ride from the city, making them ideal for a quick escape from the everyday life buzz.
Craving some salt air and fresh kibbelling? Here are three underrated beach destinations that will make you fall in love with seaside holidays in the Netherlands.

Katwijk aan Zee
Once a small fishing village just north of Den Haag, Katwijk aan Zee is now a charming coastal town that still keeps a strong connection to its roots. If you’re torn between a city trip and a beach getaway, it might just offer the perfect balance of both.
Start your day with a stroll through the historical centre, where you’ll find traditional fishermen’s houses and quiet streets that reflect the town’s past, and don’t miss the 15th-century Andreaskerk. If you’re up for a bit more, there’s a walking route through the dunes dotted with outdoor sculptures and local art installations — a lovely way to combine a hike with some unexpected cultural finds. Then head to the fish stand on the promenade (watch out for cheeky seagulls, though) or settle into one of the many beach restaurants for the catch of the day.
And of course, there’s the beach. Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing swim, a nap in the sun, or simply a drink with a sea view, Katwijk makes it easy to slow down.

Noordwijk aan Zee
Just a short ride south of Katwijk, you’ll find another seaside gem: Noordwijk aan Zee. With 13 kilometres of sandy beach, there’s plenty of space to stretch out, go for a swim, or just park yourself on a towel with a good book.
The surrounding dunes are great for walking and cycling, with peaceful trails and sea views along the way. Feeling more active? Noordwijk has you covered with surfing, kitesurfing and even yoga classes right on the beach. In the summer months, there’s always something going on — from open-air concerts and small festivals to art shows and film nights.
Check the local calendar to see what’s on during your visit.
Texel
If you’re after proper holiday vibes and don’t mind travelling a bit farther, Texel is well worth the trip. Getting there is easy — just drive or take the train to Den Helder, hop on the ferry and in about 20 minutes you’re on the island that feels much farther away from the mainland than it actually is.
The best way to explore Texel is by bike: you can follow one of the scenic trails or even do the full island loop. It’s just 65 kilometres, taking in the red lighthouse, peaceful nature reserves and cosy little villages.
Texel is also a perfect place to unwind if you’re a nature lover. It’s home to Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel, a protected dune area with walking routes, wildlife, and De Slufter — a rare tidal marsh where seawater flows straight into the dunes. It’s especially stunning around sunset. And if you’re into doing nothing at all, the beaches are more than happy to host you for a full day of chilling — no palm trees required.
