Hungarian Digital Nomad Visa: Everything you need to know

In recent years, Hungary has emerged as a promising expat destination: today it is one of roughly dozen European Union member countries with digital nomad visa programs, and its route is quite an accessible one. VisaGuide Digital Nomad Index 2025 and Immigrant Invest’s Digital Nomad Visa Index 2026 rank Hungary fifth in the global chart of the best countries for remote workers, thanks to its moderate monthly income bar and low costs of living. This guide covers the foundations of the Hungarian White Card – from requirements to limitations.

What is a Hungarian White Card?

Hungarian White Card is a residence permit for digital nomads that can be granted to third-country nationals or stateless persons who have a verified employment outside of Hungary and work remotely, or who own a share in a profitable foreign company and manage it through digital means.

Who can and can’t apply

It’s available to eligible non-Hungarian nationals and stateless persons, excluding those with EU free-movement rights. Applicants cannot work for a Hungarian employer or own shares in a Hungarian company.

The list of exclusions is quite wide: it covers specified employment and investment categories, study-permit holders, certain protection statuses and holders of an EC residence permit or EU residence card.

For example, European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) nationals and their family members can’t apply. Same goes for those who fulfill the conditions for another type of Hungarian residence permit such as guest investor, worker, self-employed etc. You can check the full list here.

What are the requirements

Applicants need at least 3,000 euros net of monthly legal income for six months before entry and throughout their stay, and savings alone do not replace this requirement.

Then there’s paperwork that should establish that the employer or company genuinely operates abroad.

For employees, an employer’s statement should confirm the role, authorised remote work and its duration, while company owners need evidence of ownership, profitable operation and their role in the business.

Applicants also need proof of accommodation, comprehensive healthcare coverage or funds to cover healthcare costs, plus a valid passport and a return or onward ticket or sufficient travel funds. The passport must remain valid for at least three months beyond the permit’s expiry.

Where can you apply?

Applications abroad normally go to the Hungarian consulate serving your nationality or habitual residence. Eligible visa-free nationals without a residence permit can apply during lawful presence in Hungary, in person or through Enter Hungary.

How much does it cost?

The official application fee abroad, including the entry visa to collect the permit, is 110 euros. Applications submitted in Hungary cost 39,000 Hungarian florins (107 euros) in person or 26,000 florins (71 euros) through Enter Hungary.

How long does it take?

The authority lists 21 days for procedural administration and 30 days for a decision with extended process in case of missing documents.

How long is the White Card valid?

It lasts up to one year and can be extended for up to another year, giving a maximum of two-year stay through this permit in total.

Can family members join you?

The Hungarian White Card program doesn’t support family reunification. The only exception that falls under this rule covers a third-country-national child of a White Card holder who is born in Hungary during the period of the parent’s residence permit validity.

What is the tax situation?

The tax residency is very individual, and even staying in Hungary fewer than 183 days a year doesn’t automatically guarantee exemption from Hungarian tax.

Restrictions worth knowing about

The White Card can be withdrawn if its holder leaves Hungary for more than 90 days, starts working for a Hungarian employer or acquires shares in a Hungarian company.

White Card holders also cannot obtain a national residence card, and time spent under the White Card does not count towards that card’s qualifying residence period. ]

Can you switch to another Hungarian residence permit?

During White Card’s validity period and after its expiry, applications for another residence purpose cannot be made from within Hungary. It doesn’t mean a permanent ban though: You can still apply from abroad if relevant requirements are met.
