During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdl.lu\/en\/visiting\/leisure-and-recreation\/festivals-fairs-and-events\/winterlights-0\">Winterlights Fest,<\/a> you\u2019ll have a chance to rub elbows with its multiculti merrymakers. Their smart and friendly attitude makes it easy to spread holiday cheer. Maybe we feel included because Luxembourgers (even the vendors) are polyglots. Most are proficient in English (as well as Luxembourgish, French and German). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what tongue you speak, you\u2019ll have a blast, since the common dialect at the Winter Lights Festival is music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Christmas market Luxembourg 2022 | Winterlights 2022  \ud83c\uddf1\ud83c\uddfa #luxembourg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B7mB5-Gn1qo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/dispatcheseurope.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-schlager-in-the-square\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schlager_music\">Schlager <\/a>in the Square <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s different about this Christmas Market is that they hold live concerts. LuxCity is a party town, so the vibe is a bit like an apr\u00e8s-ski party (minus the chunky boots). You\u2019ll probably be listening to a cover band or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schlager_music\">schlager.<\/a> There\u2019s the ubiquitous gluhwein, but for the more discerning, try a Luxembourg Cremant. Then get <em>gemittlech<\/em> (cozy) by warming up at the many camp fires. To dull the cold (or perhaps the music) grab a dram of Dr\u00ebpp liquor. My personal favorites are honey-based Hunnegdr\u00ebpp or nut-based N\u00ebssdr\u00ebpp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food at the market is typical fest fare with a Luxembourgish twist: <em>Gromperekichelcher<\/em> (potato fritters), <em>Boxem\u00e4nnercher<\/em> (a brioche in the shape of a man),<em> Gl\u00fchw\u00e4in<\/em> (hot mulled wine, either red or white), and <em>Egg Nogg<\/em> (sweetened milk, cream, vanilla and rum). Some stands accept cards, but <strong>most require cash. <\/strong>Each market offers public toilet facilities that are free and very clean. Actually, all the city\u2019s public toilets are free<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdl.lu\/en\/visiting\/leisure-and-recreation\/drinking-fountains-and-public-toilets\"> \u2013 here\u2019s the map<strong>.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chreschtmaart-stann-christmas-market-stalls\">Chr\u00ebschtmaart St\u00e4nn (Christmas Market Stalls)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Winterlights Festival has four main Christmas markets in the Old Town. All have food and craft stalls, but each has something a bit special: concerts, carnival rides and craft workshops for kids. See the list below for details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ganz-schein-foto-geleeenheet-instagrammable-hotspot\">Ganz sch\u00e9in Foto Gelee\u00ebnheet (Instagrammable Hotspot)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Get out your phones to snap a shot of Lux City\u2019s gorgeous gorges. Walk the perched ramparts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.fr\/Attraction_Review-g190356-d3710427-Reviews-Le_Chemin_de_la_Corniche-Luxembourg_City.html\">Chemin de la Corniche promenade<\/a> for the stunning viewpoint of deep gorges cut by the Alzette and P\u00e9trusse rivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: <\/strong>Use the free bus system loops through the city: Hop on, hop off, snap and <em>post deng foto<\/em> as they say in Luxembourgish! (Yes, this tiny country has its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luxembourgish\">own bizarre language<\/a>, which of course has multiple dialects.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-each-market-offers\">What each market offers:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>L\u00ebtzebuerger Chr\u00ebschtmaart at Place d\u2019Armes<\/strong><br>Children-friendly with its Christmas tree, nativity, carousel, and train. The food ranges from Calzones to Gromperekichelcher (Luxembourg potato pancake). Thirty-five chalets sell items such as winter gear (scarves, hats, gloves) and holiday decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Wantermaart at Place de la Constitution<\/strong><br>Carnival for the kids with a Christmas pyramid and tree, ferris wheel, carousel, trampoline and carnival games. About forty chalets offer cotton candy, soup, burgers, cr\u00eapes, seafood, and (for the furry family members) a pet bakery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Niklosmaart at Place de Paris<\/strong><br>Smaller market holding concerts in the evening with an hour or two of music starting at 6 p.m. each evening (Sunday at 5 p.m.) with 12 chalets, a Christmas tree, and visits from Saint Nicholas on specific days and times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Kinnekswiss Wanterpark<\/strong><br>Covered market, crafts programs for children Sundays 2 p.m.-to-5 p.m., with a variety of food and drink stalls. Good option if it is raining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-details\">The details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Winterlights Festival starts 24 November 2023 and ends 7 January 2024. It&#8217;s typically open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The good:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the wealthiest country per capita in the European Union, Lux citizens enjoy a high standard of living and low crime. Their safe streets are great for families and females, even at night (public service announcement: stay cautious). An additional plus is that prices are not jaw-dropping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The bad: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get out your GoreTex &#8211; Luxembourg City is pedestrian friendly, but water-resistant warm clothing are a winter <em>must<\/em>. Rainfall is frequent with min. temps around -1\u00b0C or 30\u00b0F.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The ugly: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, I am going to be straight &#8211; Luxembourg traffic is a nightmare. I lived in Washington D.C., and yeah, LuxCity traffic is worse. I take the train. You can leave your car at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdl.lu\/en\/getting-around\/by-car\/parkings-and-pr\/luxembourg-sud-a\">a park and ride<\/a> and take the bus into the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silver lining:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> <\/strong>All public transport in Luxembourg i<a href=\"https:\/\/luxembourg.public.lu\/en\/living\/mobility\/public-transport.html\">s free!<\/a> FREE! (yes, all of it) buses, trams and trains. FREE parking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdl.lu\/en\/getting-around\/by-car\/parkings-and-pr\/luxembourg-sud-a\">P+R Luxembourg Sud<\/a> on the outskirts of town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip: <\/strong>from the parking take the bus into the city center (15 minutes). Did I mention it\u2019s FREE? Parking in the city is NOT free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market goes on for six weeks throughout Luxembourg City.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sch\u00e9i Chr\u00ebschtdeeg<\/em>!
