The weekend starts now! Vienna weekend events list 12 January thru 15 January, 2017

If you thought that January is a slow month in Vienna, you are very wrong!

The Vienna Ball Season kicks into high gear this weekend with a total of four extraordinary balls – Steirerball, Zuckerbäcker Ball, Blumenball and the WU ball – making it an amazing weekend.

If, however, you have not prepared your formal outfits and your dance skills need improvement, there are great less-formal events including ViennaAutoshow and Vacation, Holidays and Leisure trade fairs through Sunday giving you opportunities and flexibility to enjoy every bit of it this weekend.

And the Vienna Coffee Festival 2017 makes the weekend offering even more amazing and difficult to choose where to go first. Do not stress out. Relax at Tunnel Vienna with stand-up comedy on Friday evening.

If the beginning of this year is this eventful and the events are this amazing, the only question is, “How are we going to keep up the pace?”

 • Vienna Coffee Festival 2017

For all of you who need a good cup of coffee to start the day on the right foot, here is a festival for you.

This is the third Vienna Coffee Festival bringing you exquisite coffee experience. In 2016, there were 12,000 visitors at this coffee festival. Judging by the number of visitors, this is a great festival.

What you can expect are tasting and demonstrations by baristas, interactive coffee workshops, live music, DJs, craftsmanship, SCAE barista championship.

Whether you are interested in coffee micro roasters, espresso, or filter coffee, there are designated areas for each of this at the festival location at the Ottakringer Brewery. Some of the many demonstrations, events and competitions are below.

This trade fair is all about the automobile, whether for singles, families, car fans, off-road, eco, city, for short or long distances…you get the picture. It’s all about the four-wheelers that get us places. More than 400 new cars by some 40 car makers will see their Austrian and European premier at ViennaAutoshow 2017.

• 116th ZuckerBäckerball – Confectioners Ball

January in Vienna is all about the culture of going to the balls. The weekend begins with the Zuckerbäcker or Confestioners Ball in Vienna’s Hofburg, the royal palace and the heart of Austria and Vienna.

All who have been to Vienna know the culture of cake and dessert making. The best confectioner and the confectioner apprentice shall be awarded the title of the “Vienna Cakemaster” for the best torte cake. The ball will be in the sign of great music and dancing in addition to its sweet side.

The ball program includes performance by the Star-Tenor Vincent Schirrmacher, Association of the Vienna State Opera Ballet, formal dances and more entertainment.

Vienna is one of the rare places where the ball season is the highlight of the cultural life and the ball dances a very important tradition that lives on in the 21st century. And we are at the beginning of the season.

Blumenball – the Flower Ball – is all about colors, forms, patterns and types of flowers and their influence in art, architecture and fashion. The city gardeners will use 10,000 blossoms to form unforgettable images for the ball.

The various halls of the Rathaus, Vienna’s historic city hall, will have music ranging from the waltz, polka, Latin-American dance, bar music and more.

• Styrian Ball – Steiererball

The Styrian Ball in Vienna is a celebration of the culture of this Austrian province and a great possibility to put on the finest traditional Tracht clothing made of silk and cotton and used only on special occasions.

It is the ball season and this ball is the one with a twist and lots of tradition, but much less classical. If you go, you are guaranteed to have a great time. The mix of Styrian culture, music, customs, dance and cuisine will make it happen.

• WU Ball 2017 – The ball of the Vienna University of Economics and Business

The well known traditional venue for the ball, Viennese Hofburg Palace, will open its doors this coming year for the guests of the most famous ball for students in Vienna:

General admission to the Vienna Hofburg. VIP: Special guests reception by invitation and confirmed registration only, in the “Forum” room. You will be asked to show your credentials or invitation to security officers.

Celebration of the entrance of the inaugural committee and the guests of honor under the musical direction of Prof. Hans Schadenbauer and his C.M. Ziehrer Hofballorchestra. The opening of the ball is performed by the young ladies and gentlemen of the inaugural committee with a dance choreographed by the Svabek dancing school.

After eight hours entertaining, the C.M. Ziehrer Hofballorchestra closes the ball of the WU Vienna at 5 o’clock with the traditional final waltz “Brüderlein fein”.

In order to make this traditional ball a truly exclusive event, the following dress code will be enforced with no exceptions for admission into the Hofburg!

Ladies:floor-length evening dress
Men:tailcoat, tuxedo, black suit with bow tie (no tie!) or class A uniform (EU); USDOD: formal wear

Admission is only possible with the appropriate clothing.

 

• Vintage-Design-Market of the ’50s/’60s/’70s

If you are interested in starting the New Year with some shopping of items with tradition, perhaps this vintage design market with original designs from the 50s, 60s and the 70s is something for you to do this weekend. Small furniture, porcelain, mirrors, hats, dishes will be awaiting you. The event also take place on Friday, January 13 from 16:00-19:00
