A weekend in Berlin is never JUST a weekend: Dispatches’ events guide 11 May – 14 May

Let’s hope the sun makes an appearance this weekend because Berlin has a great line-up of springtime, outdoor events! From a festival at Klunkerkranich’s rooftop bar to a half marathon and a European Song Contest viewing party. Have fun in Berlin this weekend!

Check out some design exhibitions, catch a movie at a film festival, run a 25 kilometer sightseeing tour, enjoy some live music at one of Berlin’s favorite rooftop bars or watch the Eurovision Song Contest on a big screen at an outdoor movie theater. This is your weekend in Berlin!

Pictoplasma Berlin
When: Now – 14 May

Pictoplasma is an interdisciplinary design festival which is taking place for the 13th time in Berlin this weekend.

The festival consists of eleven exhibitions in Berlin’s Mitte (the city center) and one at Urban Spree.

What to expect? A mix of illustration, animation, toy and product design, urban and fine art. Check out a map of the venues here and go see some world-class design this weekend!

XPOSED International Queer Film Festival
When: Now – 14 May

The twelfth edition of XPOSED International Queer Film Festival kicks off in Berlin today. Throughout the weekend the festival’s program features both old and new queer films.

Since the start in 2006, the festival’s aim has been “creating entertaining, odd, left of center Queer Film Programs that also expose queer filmmakers out into the international world of queer festivals and beyond.”

Big 25 Berlin
When: Sunday, 14 May

There are several ways of sightseeing. You can slowly stroll past all major sights, join a bike tour or you can run!

The Big 25 is a unique Berlin running event that combines a good workout with a fun sightseeing tour of the city.

You run past the Brandenburger Tor, Gedarmenmarkt, Potsdamer Platz and cross the finish line in the Olympiastadion.

If you are not ready to run 25 km, you can also sign up for a 10K or a 5x5K relay.

Eurovision Song Contest viewing party
When: Saturday, 13 May
Where: Freiluftkino Kreuzberg

Are you a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest? Watch the finale together with other fans at the outdoor cinema in Kreuzberg!

Entry is free and the live finale in Kiev will be broadcasted on a big screen. Good to know: you can’t buy tickets in advance so make sure you get there in time to save yourself a spot.

Zuhause Soli Festival 2017
When: 12 – 14 May
Where: Klunkerkranich
Tickets: Entry is €3-€5

One of our favorite bars in Berlin is hosting a fun festival this weekend.

Head over to Klunkerkranich for a weekend of live music, DJ’s and workshops on their lovely rooftop bar.

Theatertreffen 2017
When: Now through 21 May
Where: Haus der Berliner Festspiele

Theatertreffen is a large theatre festival which showcases ten of the best productions of the previous season and the work of some young writers. The 3 week-long festival is held at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. In addition to the shows, you can attend workshops, panels and discussions.

Crescendo
When: Now through 20 May
Where: Universität der Künste

Crescendo is a classical music festival which is being held for the 9th time this year by the Universität der Künste in Berlin. The 16-day long festival features 23 shows and 300 young artist.

You can also bring your kids to the festival for the special children’s edition: Crescendino.

Neuköllner Maientage
When:  Now through 21 May
Where: Volkspark Hasenheide, Columbiadamm 160

Though the name – May Day Festival – suggests otherwise, Neuköllner Maientage actually started on the 26th of April and continues through the 21st of May.

The outdoors festival at Volkspark Hasenheide in Berlin neighborhood Neukölln is a fun family event with tons of carnival rides, haunted houses and food stands.
